Castanets are a small instrument you play with your hands: two hard, shell-shaped pieces of wood or plastic that you click together. Dancers, especially in Spanish flamenco, often play a pair in each hand. The sound is sharp and dry. The player loops them over the thumb and flicks them with the fingers; it is harder than it looks. Orchestras also use them when a piece wants a Spanish colour. They are not shakers, and they are not spoons at the table — though the motion is a bit like clicking spoons. English usually keeps the word in the plural, like scissors.
