Working without notes and coins. Money still moves — it just moves as numbers, by card, phone, app or bank transfer. You hear it about places and systems more than about single actions: a cashless shop, a cashless payment, a cashless society, cashless transport. Taiwan gives you the picture every day: tapping an EasyCard on the bus is a cashless payment; a night market stall that only takes bills is not cashless. The word became common as card and phone payment spread, so it usually sounds modern and convenient — but not always. When people argue about a "cashless society", the word turns : old people, poor people and anyone without a bank account can be shut out, and every payment leaves a trace. So the same word can sound like progress or like a warning, depending on who is speaking. It goes before a noun.
組成cash + -less. The ending -less comes from Old English -lēas, meaning 'without' or 'free of', so cashless is 'without cash'.
