If a computer program is case-sensitive, it treats a big letter and a small letter as different things. Apple, apple, and APPLE are not the same to it. Passwords often work this way: the right letters in the wrong size will fail, and the computer will not be kind about it. File names can be the same story. On many Linux machines, Report.pdf and report.pdf are two different files; on many Windows machines they are treated as one, which is why the same name can behave differently on two computers. The opposite is case-insensitive: the program does not care about size. This is a computer word, a little technical, but you meet it the first time a login box refuses you. “Case” here means big letters or small letters — printers used to keep them in different boxes, called cases — not a court case, and not a box you carry.
「case-sensitive」形容一個電腦程式會分辨大寫和小寫字母，把它們當成不同的東西。像「Apple, apple, and APPLE are not the same to it.」，對它來說三個都不一樣。最常遇到的情境是密碼：字母對了，大小寫錯，登入就會失敗。
檔名也有同樣的問題。在很多 Linux 電腦上，「Report.pdf」和「report.pdf」是兩個不同的檔案；在很多 Windows 電腦上，它們會被當成同一個。這就是為什麼同一個名字，在兩台電腦上的行為可能不一樣。相反的是不分大小寫的版本，程式不在乎字母大小寫。
