- 1迦太基
An ancient city on the north coast of Africa, close to where , the capital of Tunisia, stands today. from Phoenicia, from the older city of Tyre, built it, and it grew rich on sea trade. Rome and Carthage fought three wars, the Punic Wars. In the second war a general, Hannibal, took an army — and elephants — over the Alps into Italy. Rome won in the end and destroyed Carthage in 146 BC. Later the Romans built a new city on the same ground, but when English speakers say Carthage they almost always mean the old city that fought Rome. It is a history-book name, always with a capital C.
組成From Middle French Carthage, from Latin Carthāgō, from Phoenician qrt-ḥdšt, “new city” (qrt “city” + ḥdšt “new”), so named to mark it as new beside the mother city, Tyre. It may have passed through Etruscan on the way into Latin.
