    To carpet-bomb a place is to drop a great many bombs over a small area so that almost everything in it is destroyed. The picture in the word is a carpet: the bombs are meant to cover the ground completely, not hit one target with care. It is a military word, and a heavy one. The related noun is carpet bombing. People also stretch the verb in news and everyday talk: a company might carpet-bomb a city with advertisements, meaning they flood the place.
