A carnation is a garden flower with a sweet, slightly spicy smell and a full, ruffled head. The look as if someone gathered cloth and it. You can get them in pink, red, white, yellow, and mixed colours; pink and red are the ones people picture first. Men still wear a single carnation on a jacket at weddings and other formal days — a small, old-fashioned badge of dressing up. In this part of the world the flower is tightly tied to Mother’s Day: shops fill with pink and red carnations that week. The name also drifted onto a pale pink, almost skin-coloured shade, because one old meaning of carnation was “the colour of flesh, a person’s complexion.” So the flower and the colour sit together, though most students will meet the flower first. It is an ordinary, slightly polite word — not slang, not technical.
組成From Middle French carnation, “flesh colour, complexion,” either through Italian carnagione or from Late Latin carnātiō, “fleshiness,” from Latin carō, “flesh, meat,” + -ātiō. As the flower and its colour, it may instead be a French mix-up of coronation — a “crowned” thing — because the flower’s head looks a little like a crown, with carnation pulling the sound over. By the look of the spelling: Latin carn- + -ate + -ion. Scholars do not all sit on one story for the flower, so both paths are worth keeping in view.
