Carmen is an opera — a story told in song — written in 1875 by the French composer Georges Bizet, the person who wrote the music. It is set in Spain and follows a bold woman called Carmen, who works around the cigarette factory in , and a soldier, Don José, who throws his life away for her. It ends badly. The music is famous even if you have never sat in an opera house: people know the tune Carmen sings about love, and the song about the . Though actually, Bizet was French, not Spanish, and the first night in Paris did not please everyone; the opera became a huge success after he died. The old plot calls Carmen a gypsy, which is how that 1875 story is written. In ordinary English, Carmen can also be a woman’s name, but this entry is the show.
組成The name Carmen is from Spanish, and it comes from the same place-name as English Carmel — Our Lady of Mount Carmel — not from the Latin word carmen meaning “song,” though that look-alike has fooled many people. The 1875 opera made the name famous far outside Spain. A separate man’s name, Carmine, was borrowed from Italian; that is not this opera.
