A cardshark is someone who plays cards to take other people’s money, often by cheating. The picture is a hustler at the table, not a friendly family game. Though actually, English is messy here. Some American speakers also use it for a player who is simply very, very good — a hunter at the table, even if the cards are honest. British English has an older twin, card sharp, with the same cheat meaning; the two forms sit side by side, and people mix them. It is informal, and it is not a compliment.

組成card + shark. Shark here is a person who preys on others for money, as in loan shark — not the fish in the sea, though it is the same English word. Some writers think this spelling followed card sharp; treat that as a maybe.
