A unit used to measure two very different things, so context matters. For gemstones like diamonds, a carat measures weight - 'a two-carat diamond' is heavier, and usually more valuable, than a one-carat one. For gold, ',' usually spelled with a k in this use, measures purity - '24 gold' is pure gold, while lower numbers mean it's mixed with other metals.
