A CAPTCHA is a little test a website gives you to check that you are a person, not a computer program pretending to be one. The old kind showed twisted letters and asked you to type what you saw. Newer ones ask you to tick a box (“I am not a robot”) or click pictures — all the traffic lights, all the buses. The name was made up in 2000 by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University. It is a loose short form of “completely public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart.” A Turing test asks whether a machine can seem human. Though actually, many CAPTCHAs now watch how you move the mouse, so you may pass one without noticing. People say the letters or treat it like a word: “CAP-cha.” It is a computer-world word.
