A capsicum is a pepper you eat as a vegetable — the hollow green, red, or yellow kind, often sweet rather than hot. Speakers in Britain, Australia, and science class are the ones who say capsicum; in American shops the same vegetable is usually called a bell pepper. Though actually, the plant group called Capsicum also includes hot , so a scientist may use the word more widely than a cook. The name comes from a Latin word for a box, because the fruit is like a little empty box with seeds inside. In a recipe, if you see capsicum, think of the sweet pepper you slice into a stir-fry, not black pepper from a mill.
