A capon is a male chicken that has had its sex organs taken out on purpose, so that it will grow bigger and fatter and the meat will stay soft. It is a food word, not a farm-pet word. You are most likely to see it on a careful restaurant menu or in an older , around a feast, not on an ordinary supermarket packet of chicken. The bird is still a chicken; the point is how it was raised for the table. The word feels a bit old and kitchen-formal. You do not call a hen a capon, and you do not call a normal one either.

組成It does not split in English. The word came down from Middle English capoun, from Old English capūn, from Old Northern French capon (Old French chapon), from Latin cāpō / cāpōnem — already a word for this fattened male chicken.
