A canto is one part of a very long poem, the way a chapter is one part of a long story. Famous long poems are cut into cantos, and school books will number them: canto one, canto two. The word comes from Italian canto, meaning “song”. Long ago, long poems were sung, or people thought of them as songs, so a “song” became a “part”. You almost never hear this word in a shop or on a bus; it belongs to books and literature class. Though actually, a few people stretch it to mean a section of any long work, but its real home is poetry. This is not the short, casual “Canto” for Cantonese — that is a different use of the same spelling.
