A kind of melon: round, with sweet orange flesh inside, and a hard skin that is usually greenish or grey-brown with a rough net-like pattern on it. You eat it raw — cut into slices for breakfast, cut into balls for a fruit salad, or wrapped in thin salty ham as a starter. The spelling cantaloup (no e) is the older, less common one; most people today write cantaloupe, and in Britain you will also hear it simply called a melon. Note that what Americans call a cantaloupe is not quite what Europeans call one — the American fruit has the netted skin, the true European cantaloupe has a smoother, ribbed skin — but shoppers rarely worry about this, and both are orange and sweet inside. Countable: one cantaloupe, two cantaloupes; but half a cantaloupe of flesh is treated as uncountable, as in "some cantaloupe".
