1. 1

Cannes is a rich, fashionable town on the Mediterranean Sea in the south of France. People go there for holidays, expensive hotels, and the sea. It is famous around the world because of the Cannes Film Festival, held every year, when new films from many countries are shown for the first time and judged. English speakers often say Cannes and mean that festival as much as the town itself. It is a proper name, so it stays Cannes in English. Though actually the town is also a real place with ordinary shops and residents — the festival is only one season of the year.
