Candida is a tiny fungus that lives on the body. When it grows too much, it causes an infection. In children it often appears in the mouth and throat as sore white patches (people also call this thrush). In women it can appear in the vagina, with and a thick white discharge. The common type has the scientific name Candida albicans; albicans means whitish, and the fungus was named from Latin candida, “white”, because of those white patches. Everyday English speakers often say yeast infection or thrush; doctors and health writing use Candida. This entry is the infection, not a woman’s name, even though Candida exists as a name from the same Latin word.
