The cancan is a fast dance from France. A line of women kick their legs high into the air, in time with loud music, often in long skirts with many layers. It became famous in Paris dance halls in the 1800s. People still use the word for that same kick-dance, on a stage or in old films. It is not a dance you do at a normal party. You can also use it as a verb, “to cancan”, but that is less common. English borrowed the word from French as it was.
