Canasta is a card game. Players use two packs of cards and try to make groups of seven cards of the same kind; that group is also called a canasta. The game comes from Uruguay, and the name is Spanish for basket. It was a favourite in living rooms in the middle of the last century. Some families still play it, but many young people have never heard of it. It is the name of one game, not a general word for playing cards.
