Camphor is a white, crystal-like substance with a sharp, cool smell. It comes from the camphor tree, or is made in a factory to copy that smell. People have long used it to keep moths and other insects out of clothes, and it goes into some rubs for sore muscles or a blocked nose. You must not eat it, and it can be dangerous for small children and for some people who already have trouble breathing — so the tidy picture of “a helpful household smell” is a bit too tidy. In East Asia it has a long history in medicine and in temples as well as in the wardrobe. The smell is close to mothballs, though actually many mothballs today are a different chemical, not camphor. A slightly old-fashioned, practical word; chemists and grandmothers both know it.
組成From Old French camphore or Medieval Latin camphora, from Arabic kāfūr, in turn from an Austronesian word such as Malay kapur.
