Camomile is a small plant with daisy-like flowers: white petals around a yellow middle. People dry the flower heads and pour hot water on them to make a pale tea that smells a little like apples. Many families drink it in the evening to feel calm or to soothe a restless stomach — though actually scientists do not all agree that it does much, and people who already react to daisies or chrysanthemums can react to this plant too. Chamomile, with an h, is the usual American spelling; camomile is the older British one. Same plant. The Greek name meant “earth-apple,” from the scent when you crush the flowers. An ordinary kitchen-and-garden word, a little gentler and more old-fashioned than “herb tea.”
