Calypso is a kind of Caribbean song, born in Trinidad, whose verses pick up what is in the news — , gossip, carnival, hard times — and sing it with rhythm, humour, and a sharp edge. The singer is often called a calypsonian. It is popular music with a public job: to comment on the week, not only to be pretty. Though actually, English spelling later dressed the word up to look like Calypso, the nymph in the old Greek story who kept on her island. Teachers sometimes repeat that link as if it were the source; the song word comes from Trinidad kaiso, perhaps from an African call, ka iso, used to urge dancers on. In newspapers, calypso almost always means the music.
組成Originally Trinidad English, an alteration of kaiso, perhaps of African origin; one suggestion is Ibibio ka iso, come on, used to urge dancers on. The spelling later borrowed the look of the mythological name Calypso; that is folk etymology, not the real root.
