A calorie is a unit for measuring energy, and on food packaging, it tells you how much energy your body can get from eating that food. When people talk about 'counting calories' or a food being 'high in calories,' they mean tracking or comparing how much energy it provides — eating more calories than your body uses can lead to gaining weight, and eating fewer can lead to losing it. Scientifically, a calorie is actually a very tiny unit, so the 'Calories' on food labels are technically 'kilocalories,' one thousand times bigger, though almost nobody uses that precise distinction in daily talk.
