A Californian is a person from California, or something that belongs to that state — Californian wine, a Californian beach. Though actually the place itself is called California, not Californian. California is a large state in the southwest of the United States, on the Pacific Ocean. Its famous cities include Los Angeles and San Francisco; the capital is the quieter city of Sacramento. Hollywood and Disneyland are there, which is why people tie the state to films and theme parks. The stretch between San Francisco and San José is nicknamed Silicon Valley and is a centre of the computer industry. California also grows a huge amount of fruit and other farm produce. In casual speech some people shorten the state to “Cali,” but the person-word stays Californian.
