1. 1

Caliber is the American spelling of calibre. It first names the inner width of a gun barrel, or the size of the bullet that fits it — a .45-caliber pistol, a small-caliber rifle. From that, English also uses it for the “size” of a person or a piece of work, meaning how good they are. A scientist of the highest caliber is not wide; she is excellent. The gun sense is technical; the quality sense is common in news and school writing. British English calibre for both. The two spellings do not change the meaning; they only mark American versus British habit.
