Cairo is the capital of Egypt and its largest city. It sits on the River Nile in the north of the country, and it is Egypt’s main centre for government, business, and industry. People also go there for museums and old buildings; the of stand just outside it. In news English, “Cairo” is sometimes stretched to mean the Egyptian government, the way “Washington” can mean the American one. The name came into English from Italian Il Cairo, from Arabic al-qāhira — a name that points to “the victorious” or “the conqueror”. It is a proper name: always capital C, and you do not make it plural.
