In British informal English, a caff is a café — typically the unpretentious kind: cheap breakfasts, mugs of tea, wipe-clean tables, not a fancy coffee bar. It has a working, everyday flavour, a little old-fashioned in a fond way; some younger speakers still use it, others hear it as their parents’ word. Americans do not say this. Though actually the dictionary line just says “a café,” real use leans toward the greasy-spoon or works-canteen end, not a quiet specialty shop.
