A caesarean is an operation in which doctors cut open the mother’s belly and the place where the baby grows, then lift the baby out, instead of the baby being born in the usual way. People usually say caesarean section, or in everyday talk a C-section / she had a caesarean. It can be planned weeks ahead, or it can happen in a hurry if a normal birth becomes dangerous. It is a common, serious medical word, not slang. American English often spells it cesarean. The name is tied to Caesar. A famous story says Julius Caesar was born this way; though actually most historians think that story is probably not true. Some people link the word to a Latin word for cut. Either way, English kept Caesar’s name on the operation.
