Caernarfon is a small town in northwest Wales, by the sea, with a famous medieval castle. That castle is where the British king or queen’s eldest son is given the title Prince of Wales in a special ceremony. Prince Charles — now King Charles III — had that ceremony there in 1969. The town sits in a strongly Welsh-speaking part of the country, and the name itself is Welsh, not English. Older English maps often wrote Carnarvon or Caernarvon; the Welsh spelling with f, Caernarfon, is the one you should use now. It is a place name, so it takes a capital C. People visit for the castle and for Welsh history, not because it is a huge city.
