Cadmium is a soft, silvery metal and a chemical element. Its symbol is Cd. People use it in some rechargeable batteries, in certain bright yellow and red paints, and in the control rods that help keep a nuclear reactor safe, because it soaks up tiny particles called neutrons. It is poisonous. If it builds up in the body it can hurt the kidneys and bones, so factories must handle it with care, and many countries have cut down how much cadmium they allow in things we touch. You will meet the word in science class, on battery labels, and in news about pollution — not in everyday talk about food or clothes.
組成Named in 1817 from Ancient Greek Καδμεία (Kadmeía), “calamine,” a mix of minerals that contains cadmium, itself named after the legendary king Cadmus (Κάδμος).
