1. 1

To cadge is to ask someone you already know for a small thing — a cigarette, a bit of money, a lift, a sandwich — because you have none, or you do not want to pay. It is informal, a little cheeky, and more British than American. You cadge from a friend or a colleague, not from a stranger in the street; that would be closer to begging. It often has a slightly lazy, sponging feel, but between friends it can also be light. The noun is rarer; the verb is the one you will meet. It is not a rude word, but it is not polished either — you would not put it in a formal letter. Younger American English uses it much less; if a student only meets US English, they may hardly see it.
