    c/o is the written short form of care of. You put it in an address when you are sending a letter or a parcel to someone who is not living there as their own home — they are staying there, working there, or another person will pass it on. You write the person’s name, then c/o, then the name of the person or office that will take the mail. It is not spoken much as a word; it lives on and forms. It is neither fancy nor slang. It is just practical, and it tells the post office: this mail is for A, but B will look after it.
