A bygone is a time that has already gone — days, years, or an age that is finished. You most often see it in front of another word: bygone days, a bygone age, bygone fashions. That use is more common than the noun, and it has a slightly old, story-like feel: people use it when the past seems far away, not when they mean last Tuesday. As a noun, a bygone is a thing or stretch of the past, though that use is less common in everyday talk. The word does not mean “forgotten” on its own; it only says the thing is over. You meet it in writing more than in chat.
