A buzzer is a small thing, often the size and shape of a button, that makes a short buzzing sound when you press it or when it is set off. On a quiz show, the player hits the buzzer to answer. A door, a game, or a waiting disc in a restaurant may do the same job: it buzzes to say 'now'. The word is simply 'the thing that buzzes'. It is ordinary English, not fancy and not slang. Though actually, not every bell is a buzzer. Some chime; a buzzer has that rough little electric hum. If you only remember the quiz-show button, you already have the right picture.
