A butler is the chief male servant in a large private house. In the old British picture he answers the door, looks after the wine and the room, and manages the other servants. The name began as the officer in charge of the bottles — the wine — so butler and bottle are the same pieces, split differently over time. Though actually a butler’s job grew far past wine. Today very few families have one; you meet the word in films, in hotels that offer “butler service,” and as a joke for a very formal man in a suit. It is not a word for any male . A waiter, a driver, or a cleaner is not a butler. The female head of household staff was traditionally a , though hotels now use butler for any gender.
