English speakers used Bushman for some of the peoples of southern Africa, especially in and around the Kalahari, who have lived for a very long time in dry wild country. The name is simply bush plus man: “person of the wild country.” That is an outsider’s name, made in English, not the name the people first gave themselves. Many now prefer San, or the name of their own group, and some find Bushman old-fashioned or rude, as if a whole people were being named after the bush. Some older books and some speakers still use Bushman without meaning harm; if you are writing carefully, San, or the specific group name, is safer. Though actually, in Australia a bushman is just a man who lives and works in the — a job-and-place word, not the name of an African people. Capital B Bushman in a textbook about Africa is usually the people; bushman in a story about Australia is usually the other meaning.
