The meaning you are meeting — not telling anyone you are good at something — almost never sits on the word bushel alone. People say hide your light under a bushel. That line comes from the Bible: you light a lamp, and you do not cover it with a basket, or nobody can see the light. So if you hide your light under a bushel, you keep your skill, your goodness, or your bright idea quiet, as if you dropped a basket over it. Teachers still say Don’t hide your light under a bushel to mean: let people see what you can do. Nobody says I bushel to mean “I hide my talent.” The whole phrase does that job. Though actually, a bushel is first an old basket, and also a unit for measuring dry things like grain or apples — a fairly big amount. In some country markets people still sell fruit by the bushel. City students may only ever meet the Bible phrase, and that is fine, as long as you know why a basket is in it.
組成From Middle English busshel, from Old French boissel, a grain measure. Behind that is an older Celtic word for a handful, or the palm of the hand.
