In this sense, burton is British informal talk for lost, broken, or dead — but you almost never meet the word alone. People say gone for a burton. A radio that has gone for a burton is bust. A plan that has gone for a burton has failed. In wartime the same phrase could mean a person had been killed, so it can sound light about objects and quite dark about people. It is old-fashioned slang now; younger British speakers may still understand it from or films, but it is not global English. As a place-name, Burton comes from Old English burh (a fort) plus tun (a farm or village). That is a different Burton. Where the slang phrase itself came from, people are not sure — stories about beer from Burton, or an old advertisement, get repeated, and they may not be true. Do not use burton as a fancy stand-alone word for dead.
組成The place-name Burton is usually from Old English burhtun (a fortified farmstead, or a farm near a stronghold), from burh + tun. The slang sense lives inside the phrase gone for a burton; its own origin is not settled, so it is safer not to pin it to that farmstead story.
