A burly person is big and strong, with a thick body and often broad shoulders. We nearly always say it of a man: a burly farmer, a burly policeman at the door. It does not just mean tall, and it does not mean fat. A burly man looks as if he could lift something heavy — solid, not merely large. It is a friendly, slightly old-fashioned describing word: not rude, not medical, not slang. You would not usually call a woman burly; to many ears that would sound odd or . It describes the whole build, not one muscle.

組成From Middle English burly / burely, “tall, stately”. The deeper origin is uncertain. Some have linked it to bower (a dwelling) + -ly, or to an old idea of something raised up; another split is burl + -y. Scholars do not agree, so it is safer not to hang a family on it.
