In baseball (and softball), to bunt is to hit the ball on purpose so that it travels only a short way. You do not swing hard. You hold the bat out and let the ball tap it, and the ball rolls onto the grass near the infield. Players do this as a plan — often to help a teammate move to the next base, or to surprise the fielders — not because they failed to hit. A weak accidental dribble is not a bunt. People who follow these games also use the noun: that kind of hit is “a bunt.” Outside baseball talk the word is rare.
