A bumptious person is too proud of their own abilities, in a way that gets on other people’s nerves. They are not just confident. They push their cleverness or importance at you: they interrupt, they correct everyone, they look pleased with themselves. The word is rather and a little old; you will meet it in novels and sharp newspaper writing more than in everyday school talk. It is always a criticism. Nobody says “I am bumptious” as praise. It sits near proud and cocky, but it especially catches the noisy, self-important kind of pride that makes other people look away.
