A bulldog is a strong, heavy dog with a very large head, a short thick neck, short thick legs, and a face that looks pushed in. The coat is often white, brown, or mixed. The name comes from bull-baiting, an old blood sport where dogs were set on a bull — a cruel practice, now banned. People also stretch the word: they may call a stubborn, brave person a bulldog, and the British sometimes use the bulldog as a picture of not giving up. There are related kinds, like the French bulldog, which is smaller.
