A bulkhead is a strong wall inside a ship or an aircraft that cuts the inside into separate parts, like rooms. On a ship, bulkheads help stop water spreading if one part is damaged; on a plane they separate the cabin from cargo space and so on. It is a technical word, not one you need in the shop. Though actually, air talk about bulkhead seats — the row just behind one of those walls, often with a little more leg room. The first half looks like bulk meaning “a large amount,” but that is not where it comes from.
