1. 1

A bugbear is a thing that makes people or worried — a problem that keeps coming back. Slow trains can be a bugbear. Hard homework can be a bugbear. The word feels a little old, and a little British, though Americans say it too. Long ago it meant a scary creature grown-ups used to children. That monster sense is mostly gone. Though actually, you can still hear a little of it: a bugbear is the thing someone dreads, not only the thing that nags. In ordinary talk now it is milder than terror. It is this really bothers me.
