A budgerigar is a small parrot from Australia that people keep as a pet. It is the long, rather formal name; most English speakers just say budgie. In the wild the bird is usually green and yellow, with dark bars on the wings, but pet birds come in blue, white, and many other colours. They chatter, they can copy a few words, and they like company. You will see the full word on a zoo sign, in a science book, or on a pet-shop label. In ordinary talk, budgie is what people say.
