A buckboard is a light cart with four wheels, pulled by a horse. It was a common way to travel in the United States in the 1800s, on farms and between small towns. The floor was a springy wooden board, so riders bounced as they went — as if the cart itself gave a little kick. It carried people and light loads, not heavy farm goods. You will meet the word in history books and Western stories; you will not see a buckboard in ordinary traffic today.
