A buckaroo is a cowboy: a person who rides a horse and looks after cattle, especially in the American West. People use this word most when they talk to children, or when they want a fun, old-West sound — in songs, picture books, and films. Grown-ups who really work on a ranch more often say cowboy; buckaroo feels playful, almost like a nickname. Though actually, it is not a made-up children's word. English took it from Spanish vaquero, then changed the sound and spelling, a little under the pull of buck — a horse that leaps, or a lively young man. So the tidy picture is “a cute word for cowboy,” and the messy truth is that it is the Spanish word in a new suit.
