Bub is a way of speaking to a man, usually one you do not know well — and often when you are . It is American, informal, and a bit old-fashioned. 'Listen, bub…' is the kind of line you hear in films when someone is warning a man or putting him down. It is not a warm nickname. A teacher would not say it; a tired stranger or a tough character in a story might. Do not use it to a woman, and do not use it if you want to be polite. In British English you are more likely to hear mate or pal in that same sharp tone.
