BTW is the written short form of by the way. You drop it into a message when you want to add a side thought — something extra, not the main point. It lives in email, chat, and texts. Young people type it in lowercase (btw) as often as in capitals. It is friendly and casual, not rude, but it feels too loose in a school essay, a job letter, or a formal talk. In speech, people say the full words 'by the way'; they almost never say the letters out loud except when they are reading a message aloud.
