Brussels is the capital city of Belgium. It sits in the middle of the country, and Belgian government work happens there. Though actually, when many people say Brussels they are not talking about the streets or the shops at all. The main offices of the European Union are in this city, and NATO is run from there too. So news writers often say “Brussels” when they mean “the EU” — as if the city name were the name of the whole group of countries. You will hear this a lot: “Brussels has decided…”, “talks in Brussels…”. The city itself lives in two languages, French and Dutch. The Dutch name is Brussel, and that is the name English borrowed.
組成English borrowed Dutch Brussel. The older Dutch pieces are *bruoc (marsh, wet ground) and *sali (a hall, a building): a hall or settlement on marshy ground. The “EU” meaning is later: people named the club after the city where its offices sit.
