Brushwood is the small, dry, often dead branches and twigs that come off trees and bushes. It is the messy wood you might gather for a small fire, or the low tangle of sticks in a wood. You would not call a thick log brushwood. Farmers, walkers, and forest stories use the word. Though actually, in some places people just say brush for the same thing. Brushwood makes the wood part clear: it is the woody bits, not green leaves.
